John Muir- He was an explorer that helped to preserve national parks. He was recognized by the President at the time.
Gene Rosellini- He devoted his life to an expiriment. He wanted to know if humans have come too far with technology that they couldn't survive without gunpowder, steel, and other artifacts of civilization. He found that it was possible, but he eventually got bored of it and committed suicide, leaving no clues as to why.
John Waterman- He had large goals, he was the 3rd youngest person to stand atop the highest landform on the continent. He was one of the most promising young alpinists in America. Like Chris, he did not have a good relationship with his father, he also tried to go on an outrageous journey and died doing it.
Carl McCunn- 35 year old photographer went alone to a lake near the Coleen River to take pictures. Like Chris, he had no common sense. He never set up a flight to come pick him up.
Everett Ruess- 16 years old and went on a solo trip hitchhiking and trekking through Yosemite and Big Sur, winding up in Carmel. After that, he got his diploma, and shortly after he tramped through Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico. He was just as romantic as McCandless, also he was undeterred by physical discomfort, and changed his name, although he still went by Everett Ruess for the next 3 years. He then changed his name to Nemo, which means nobody. There are a few theories to what happened to him- fell into a canyon or off of a cliff, was murdered, drowned, or is still alive and changed his name. Everett Ruess is the most related to Chris McCandless. They both were bored with their lives and routine, so they wanted to get away. They tried to test themselves by not eating and surviving in the wild.
